Kahma Lass wins Guineas
THE potent combination of Matamata trainer Jamie Richards and rider Opie Bosson guided Kahma Lass to victory in the group 1 One Thousand Guineas at Riccarton Park on Saturday.
Wearing the colours of Cambridge Stud proprietors Brendan and Jo Lindsay, Bosson produced a masterclass to weave the Darci Brahma filly between runners in the home straight before striking the front with 100m to run.
Bought by Te Akau Racing boss David Ellis for $290,000 at the 2019 national yearling sale, Kahma Lass was having just her fourth start.
‘‘We knew she was pretty sharp when she trialled up as a 2yrold but she had to get through some maturity issues,’’ Richards said.
Richards and the Te Akau operation had a brilliant day.
They also won the Welcome Stakes for 2yrolds with Avonello, an open 1400m race with Remington (and filled the quinella with Equinox), a rating 74 1200m race with Summer Monsoon, and a rating 74 1600m race with Markus Aurelius.
However, the New Zealand Cup went to Dragon Storm, ridden by Craig Grylls for Ruakaka trainer Chris Gibbs. — NZ Racing Desk/staff reporter
