Welcome to the Waitaki District

-

WHETHER you want to relax lakeside, stroll the streets, or traverse the region with the wind in your hair, you’re spoiled for choice.

If you consider yourself an explorer, you can easily spend a day, a week, and more getting under the skin of this untapped holiday destination.

Pedal from New Zealand’s highest mountain past treelined lakes and Geosites on the Alps2Ocean Cycle Trail. You can ride the entirety of the trail in 46 days or bike sections at a time for a fun day excursion.

Jump into the silkslip like waters at Lake Aviemore’s camping grounds, or better yet, bust out the power boat, jet skis, and windsurfer. Fishing enthusiasts rejoice, there’s a good number of brown and rainbow trout to keep you busy.

If you’re after a little calm, you’re in luck, there’s more than one perfect place for peace and quiet. It’s easy to immerse yourself in the charming towns found along your way.

A visit to Oamaru will open your eyes to its unique heritage. It boasts the most wellpreserved Victorian streetscape in New Zealand, all carved from local limestone. Celebrate things that were made to last and spend a couple of hours perusing the local art and antiques.

Head to Palmerston, the gateway to the Otago Goldfields Heritage Trail, and make the most of its magical coastal walks. Commanding views of Shag River and the unspoilt coastline will help you find your breath and decompress.

However you like to holiday, there’s a place and an adventure waiting for you in the Waitaki.
