I RESPECTFULLY suggest that the mayor and all councillors, perhaps with the exception of one, immediately vote themselves a 20% pay increase and go on holiday until the next election. Dunedin’s residents and ratepayers will thank you for it.

I EXPECT the Dunedin City Council to start three new ‘‘naughty files’’ on Crs Houlahan, Laufiso and Staynes (ODT,

18.11.20), the same as it has for Lee Vandervis. If not, why not? No doubt the mayor will now have to employ two more assistants, one to keep track of these incidents, and one to file ‘‘hurt feelings reports’’.

IN 1962, my grandfather died of injuries received when he was hit by a car (not the driver’s fault) by the Musselburgh shops. Cr Garey might like to consider pedestrianising that area, too!

IT is not the national fertility rate that is the lowest figure ever (ODT, 19.11.20). It is the ‘‘fecundity’’ rate — births. Fertility is about the potential to give birth. Fecundity is the actual birth rate. Therefore, the nation has a low birth rate. It is anyone’s guess as to the actual fertility of its citizens.

The book award this week must surely go to Mr G.M. McKenna (Letters, 24.11.20). If I’ve ever actually ‘‘chortled’’, I believe that I did when I read that.
