Embers ignite blaze

A SHED, truck, and digger went up in flames after embers in an incinerator reignited near Shag Point yesterday.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said three fire crews from Palmerston were called to the scene on State Highway 1 at 8.16am.

Crews were dampening down by 8.56am, he said.

Police were initially called to the scene, but fire risk management officer Mark Bredenbeck later determined the fire was started by embers in an incinerator which reignited due to the wind.

The recent wet weather meant the fire had not spread any further, which was lucky, he said.
