Gas leak causes deadly blast

-

Firefighters work after a deadly explosion at a building belonging to the Catholic Church in downtown Madrid, Spain, yesterday.

At least four people died and 11 were injured when the building was blown apart by an explosion.

Evidence pointed to the blast having been caused by a gas leak, emergency services said, although the cause of the leak was yet to be determined.

Isabel Romero, whose 8yearold son is a pupil at a school next to the building, said all the windows in one of the classrooms shattered and the children were very shaken.

The building was a complex which provided residential training for priests and gave meals to the homeless, a neighbour said.

The top five floors were destroyed, with walls blown out, while the bottom two floors were mostly intact, but charred.
