Thanks for the sustainability articles
THANKS to the Otago Daily Times for the ongoing publication of thoughtprovoking articles that discuss sustainability in primary production. Allan Richardson’s excellent article on regenerative and organic farming talked about their health, economic and climate change benefits. Sally
Rae profiled Greg Smith, CEO of Bremworth, which is utilising a local and sustainable resource to produce wool carpets.
Anna Campbell also raises topical issues in her ‘‘Fence lines’’ column, for example (ODT, 3.8.22) how new fermentation technologies using microbes to produce protein could displace a lot of meat and milk production here in New Zealand. These techniques are being hailed by investment companies and vegans, but will they be used to produce just another industrial factory food? The nutrition is unlikely to match that of real food, which has many healthgiving compounds and micronutrients. Also, if genetic engineering is used, then issues such as health and safety, ethics, and corporate intellectual property must be investigated.

Nichols Rd crash
MY wife and I wish to thank, most sincerely, those who attended her car crash in Nichols Rd this week.
Thanks to the neighbouring couples who arrived first, the wonderful Outram Volunteer Fire Brigade, police, Delta utilities, St John, and the fantastic overworked hospital ED staff.
Your combined efforts are extremely appreciated.

Whitebaiters
I NOTE that Doc is requesting whitebaiters to document and log their catches. I wonder how long before they bring in ‘‘tag and release’’. Don Mackenzie
