Trying to fix what are nonproblems

-

ANDREW Simms is electioneering (ODT, 27.8.22) on the premise that, if he is elected to the MosgielTaieri Community Board, he will sort out all the various ills of that community.

Does he live under a rock? He claims he will rid the main street of Mosgiel of logging and livestock trucks.

For his edification I shall disclose that I have lived on that same main street for upwards of five years.

Being retired I have a lot of time to look out and watch the traffic go by. I have never seen a livestock truck go by (why would they unless lost?) and since Mt Allen has been harvested, I see no logging trucks.

But why would he think that he would influence management decisions over the property of others? Gordon Rd is the property of Waka KotahiNZTA, not the Dunedin City Council, so why would NZTA give audience to a lowly ranked DCC community board member?

Does the board of Countdown tell the board of New World how to maintain its car parks? I think not.

Is this right?

WITH local council elections next month, I believe the voting public need to be greatly concerned at the voting approval to include on the Invercargill City Council this year two nonelected individuals, Pania Coote and Evelyn Cook.

They did this despite the fact neither of these two were elected to council in 2019. The justification by Invercargill city councillors to grant their appointment on the council was to give them special council recognition of their relative connection they both gained at birth.

I believe this is undemocratic. Coming with full ratepayerpaid remuneration and a vote and say on council decisions it is an insult to local democracy. Invercargill voters deserve to know which councillors voted in support of this.
