Hair ‘cutathon’ to raise money for hospice

- NIC DUFF

HAIR — there and everywhere.

Hairdressers from all over Otago will be banding together for a charity hair cutathon this weekend.

About 10 hairdressers will be cutting hair for 24 hours straight in a bid to raise money for the Otago Community Hospice.

They will start cutting at 4pm tomorrow.

The event has been organised by Zen Hair salon codirectors Haley Cron and

Liana KingBiddulph and will also feature a raffle and silent auction.

The pair have more than 30 years’ experience cutting hair between them but have never worked for this long in one go before.

‘‘I’ve done some big shifts in my time but I have not done 24 hours,’’ Ms Cron said.

The hospice was running at a loss for the first time in a decade, she said.

The cause was especially important for Ms Cron, whose stepfather died last year. She said the support he and the family received from the hospice was instrumental.

‘‘They’re pretty amazing people to be around and to know that you have that support is pretty incredible. The support afterwards as well, it’s more than just end of life, it’s helping people through a really, really tough time. Supporting not just the person that’s going through it but their family members and their friends.

‘‘I’ve been there a lot and I will be there in the future again. It scares me to think that people couldn’t get the services and the level of care that I’ve experienced secondhand.’’

Ms KingBiddulph said the amount of support from the community has been ‘‘unreal’’.

‘‘People have given when they’ve got nothing to give. People have donated when they’ve got nothing to donate and then people who do have been so generous as well. ‘‘It’s been really special.’’ She said they hope to raise $10,000 from the event.

‘‘It’s a tiny little bit that they need, but it would be amazing if we could get to that.’’
