Questions about the redevelopment of Moana Pool answered

-

I wish to thank Georgia and her team for her support and kindness.

Even when getting something as mundane as wood it can be special when someone is so kind.

Every smile and kind word matters. Thank you.

AS a frequent user of Moana Pool I’m interested in the new development that has just recently started.

I certainly look forward to this upgrade, but what concerns me is when I have asked the pool staff what the outcome is going to look like they have no idea — not even their office staff, who I would have thought should know.

Even just to pass on to the public some sort of outline as to what we should expect when completed.

I do recall an article in the Otago Daily Times some weeks ago that the alterations were going to start.

My question to the Dunedin City Council is why haven’t you shown the public, the users of the pool, what we can expect to see in the upgrade and given some idea how long the project is expected to take?

We keep hearing about transparency these days, so why should it take a letter to the ODT for you to realise we, the public and pool users, want to be kept informed? Graeme Hunt The Glen

DCC group manager parks and recreation Scott MacLean replies:

[‘‘The work at Moana Pool involves increasing the family changing room capacity from nine to 16 changing rooms, including three accessible changing rooms, two large dry changing rooms for groups and 11 family changing rooms — five with showers and six without showers.

‘‘Four poolside showers will also be added beside the learners’ pool.

‘‘The west wall of the main pool building will be strengthened and reclad with a lighter weight material inside and out and the Just Swim hub will be added to the end of the learners’ pool building.

‘‘There will be some disruption to changing rooms, the learners’ pool and the old dive pool but temporary changing rooms will be available. On weekdays, there will be reduced parking and increased truck traffic in the rear car park.

‘‘This first stage is expected to be completed in October 2023. All the Moana Pool improvements, including replacement of the hydroslides, are expected to be completed in 2025.’’]
