Capturing ‘the speed of change’
From bare paddock to dense housing is the theme of a special photography project documenting rapid change in South Auckland.
Papakura photographer Tony Smith is creating a timelapse series of the new subdivision being built just off PapakuraClevedon Rd.
Smith, a semi-retired TV news and current affairs cameraman, got into photography as a hobby eight years ago.
He hopes his work will capture ‘‘the history of a neighbourhood’’.
‘‘I like documenting change in the Papakura district with photography and a lot of this has been by aerial shots.
‘‘So starting with a virtually empty paddock a couple of years ago and then slowly adding to it.
‘‘It was a new development when I moved here six years ago, now look at it … I’m just astonished at the speed of change,’’he says.
Smith is a member of the Manukau Photographic Society and also enjoys photographing birds with a number of portraits for sale in Papakura’s Mottletop cafe and Karaka’s Red Shed.
Smith describes Papakura as a ’’laid back, quiet … friendly place’’ and hopes to start documenting other areas which are quickly developing such as Drury and Takanini. Go tonysmithphotography.co.nz see more of Smith’s work. to to
