Piako Post

FROM THE NEWS DESK

-

In this week’s Post we have a strong focus on the local government elections, speaking to returning mayor Jan Barnes, talking about her next three-year term. We have a special report on voter apathy, following the noncontest result of the Morrinsville and Te Aroha wards in the coming local government elections for the district. Moving away from politics, Katrina Tanirau reports on more vandalism attacks on one of the district’s important wetland sites, which has angered authorities who want help protecting the area. It’s also upset many volunteers who offer their time to look after the site. It is suggested there is unrest about cyclists not being allowed to bike through the wetlands. But this is an area which must be protected and the council says there are plenty of other places for people to cycle in the district. The council along with Fish & Game are keen for any information on the vandalism attacks. The matter has been referred to the police.
