Got $3m? You still can’t buy this Lambo

- CHRIS WOODYARD AND DOUG SAIL

In the world of exotic cars, exclusivity is everything.

And Lamborghini has taken it to a new limit: A drop-dead gorgeous supercar that you couldn’t buy even if you could come up with the NZ$3 million it would take to own one.

The Lamborghini Centenario made its US debut at the Quail Motorsports Gathering in California ahead of the Pebble Beach Concours’ d’Elegance. Only 40 will be made, evenly split between coupes and roadsters. And all are claimed. They all have buyers waiting to plunk down the cash. Interlopers into this exclusive circle are out of luck. Lambo has had a number of small batch designs lately, each a little different than the others and each having its own characteristics. Centenario is the first Lambo, for instance, with rear-wheel steering.

It also has all the features that make it distinctive to the brand, like upward-opening doors or what have become known as ‘‘Lambo doors.’’

Centenario continues the brand’s breathtaking performance. It has a V12 engine producing 770 horsepower without the benefit of a turbocharger. It will zip from zero to 100 kilometres per hour in a heartpounding 2.8 seconds.

While none of its performance was on display at Monterey Car Week, it’s sheer beauty alone won the hearts of those attending the auto shows.

Aston Martin joined in the fun of unveiling a luxury limited edition with the Vanquish Zagato Volante to accompany its previous reveal of the Vanquish Zagato Coupe. Aston Martin said that just 99 Vanquish Zagato Coupes will be built and customer deliveries are expected to begin in 2017.

The Vanquish Zagato Volante is the latest creation from a collaboration that reaches back over nearly six decades., beginning with the DB4 GT Zagato race car of 1960 and includes the DB7 Vantage Zagato of 2002, 2011’s V12 Vantage Zagato.

Both the Volante and the Coupe will share an enhanced version of Aston Martin’s iconic V12 powertrain, increasing its output to 592bhp with a projected 0-100kmh time of 3.7 seconds.

Aston Martin has not revealed a price.
