Tough choice for sport star

- JO LINES-MACKENZIE

Tegan Broomfield could have a tough decision to make in the not too distant future.

The Morrinsville College student who at 5’11 and 15-yearsold, is a committed sports star who has a number of codes to choose from.

The Year 10 student was kept busy over winter, helping both the school’s junior and senior girls’ basketball teams to victory in the Central Country competition.

More a defence player, Broom- field stepped out of her comfort zone in the senior final against Hauraki Plains to take on a bigger shooting role after the team lost a player to injury, helping the team to a 70-38 victory.

‘‘I wasn’t the best shooter, but I had to step up because I was the only tall person on the court, so I had to drive to the basket,’’ Broomfield said.

The junior team completed its season unbeaten with a 45-32 win over Melville High School in the final.

Broomfield juggled not only the junior and senior basketball team commitments, which meant two training sessions a week, but also two games on Wednesday nights, as well as playing for the college’s top netball team.

‘‘I got a bit tired first playing the juniors and then the seniors. The senior girls were a bit bigger and taller so I had to work a bit harder,’’ Broomfield said.

Her coach for both basketball teams Moroni Sunnex has been impressed with Broomfield’s commitment.

‘‘I might be a bit bias of some of these girls, but I see her [Broomfield] and some of the other girls we have, they could represent Waikato and easily higher. It’s tough to excel in two sports so it will really depend on if she wants to focus on netball or basketball. I know that she can represent quite highly in netball but I’ve spoken with her mum and she probably would have a better chance at doing well at basketball,’’ Sunnex said. Currently, netball is Broomfield’s preferred choice.

‘‘Netball is my main focus and I would one day like to get into teams like the Magic or Silver Ferns. I will have to work hard, though,’’ Broomfield admits.
