Taking better care of our elders
Elder Abuse Awareness Week begins Thursday, June 15.
It’s a good time to consider those in our community who may be at risk of isolation and abuse.
In our increasingly busy and technology-driven society it can be easy for older people to become isolated.
A recent Age UK survey highlighted that 40 per cent of older people in Britain identified the television as their main form of company.
Older people are at greater risk of isolation for several reasons.
They often face reduced physical mobility and visual or auditory challenges.
The death of a spouse or partner, geographical separation from other family members, and a possible lack of confidence using social media can all be barriers for engaging in the community.
Social isolation can make older people an easier target for scammers and abuse.
The It’s Not OK campaign estimate that in New Zealand up to 32,000 people may be experiencing elder abuse.
It can be difficult for older people to speak out against abuse as more than 75 per cent of abusers are family members.
If you suspect something, say something.
Contact Age Concern on 07 838 2266, or the It’s Not OK family violence helpline on 0800 456 450.
If someone is in immediate danger phone the police on 111.
Look out for each other, touch base with neighbours and friends.
A smile or kind word, or offering a helping hand can go a long way towards helping people feel more connected.
