Still going strong after 40 years

- STAFF REPORTERS

June is a exciting month for the Te Aroha Country Music Club as members prepare to mark their 40th birthday in style.

A very special day is planned for this Sunday June 25 at the Catholic Church hall on Whitaker St, for all members and their invited sister club from Tauranga.

The lady who started the club all those years ago, and who was the first president, Merle Howarth- Hine has been invited to go along and help cut the special birthday cake marking 40 years.

Along with current president, Ian Colhoun, it will be a great honour to have her on the day, and for both of them to cut the cake.

Joy Adams, a very well known singer, will be one of two special guest artists on the day.

Joy is the driving force behind the StarBuddy Charitable Trust and the birthday celebrations will give an opportunity to support this charity.

The aim of StarBuddy is to raise money and awareness for children’s charities and organisations associated with kids with severe illness, special needs and/ or disability, and to support the local branches of St John Ambulance.

A child from the Te Aroha area will be chosen to receive a special gift, a donation made to the charity closely associated to the child and a donation made to the local branch of St John Ambulance.

The second guest artist is Keith Pereira.

Keith is a newcomer to the country music scene, but in just one year has made a big name for himself and has won a cupboard full of trophies from the various awards around the country.

Grant Timoti-Reha, from Rotorua will be compere for the day.

Grant is a well-known entertainer and a great singer in his own right, but has also made a name for himself as a comic compere.

Anyone is welcome to go along and enjoy the day, it’s just $5 entry for non-members, and you get to enjoy a day that’s sure to be full of fun and laughter, friend- ship and beautiful music.

A slap up afternoon tea, with a piece of birthday cake will also be provided.

Te Aroha Country Music 40th Birthday celebrations take place on Sunday June 25, at the Catholic Hall on Whitaker St, starting at 12pm. Take your lunch along and club members will start your afternoon off with a cup of tea or coffee.
