Mighty MIS hockey team secures title

- RHYS MCCOWATT

The Morrinsville Intermediate MIS Sticks hockey team took part in the B grade final against the Te Rapa Titans on Friday night at the Gallagher Hockey centre in Hamilton.

Belief was high in the team after dispatching the top of the table Saints United the previous week 3-1.

The match started with Te Rapa having the majority of possession and the MIS Sticks keeping their distance from their hard hitting forwards. The MIS Sticks defenders worked extra hard to keep them at bay.

The MIS Sticks broke away more often as the half went on and finally managed to score with only five minutes to go in the first half. Advantage MIS Sticks.

The half time break saw the MIS Sticks implored to not give Te Rapa such easy possession and to fight hard for 25 more minutes. The second half saw the MIS Sticks really give it their all. Everyone dug deep and put their bodies on the line.

They used the wings more often and ten minutes into the second half the MIS Sticks were rewarded for their efforts with a great goal.

The team then lifted another level and through sheer determination kept Te Rapa at bay for the rest of the half. A final attack from Te Rapa was defended by the MIS Sticks goalie to keep them scoreless. The final score was 2-0 to the mighty MIS Sticks.

The team that started the season in D grade, popped up to B grade, and made all their supporters proud as punch by winning the B grade final.

The Morrinsville Intermediate motto is ‘‘Kia U Ki Te Pai, what ever you do, let it be your your best’’, and the 16 young people that took to the turf for the MIS Sticks this year certainly showed it.
