Ranfurly Shield challenge nears

-

Waikato suffered another heavy defeat falling to Wellington 34-10 at FMG Stadium Waikato on Saturday.

The team is regrouping for this Saturday’s Ranfurly Shield Challenge against holders, Canterbury in Christchurch.

It was hoped that Waikato’s captain, Dwayne Sweeney, who has been out with a groin injury, could return for the important match.

In last Saturday’s game, Wellington opened the scoring early when Daniel Kirkpatrick converted a penalty kick for the visitors from out in front as they lead Waikato 3-0 after four minutes.

Wellington was reduced to 14 men, when the referee gave a yellow card to hooker Asafo Aumua for his shoulder charge. But unfortunately Waikato wasn’t able to capital in the extra man advantage.

Waikato did drew level at the midway point of the first half when Sevu Reece convert a penalty for the home team.

Both teams had trouble finishing off their attacking opportunities until five minutes before half time when Wellington lock Sam Lousi scored the first try of the evening. Daniel Kirkpatrick added the extras and Wellington were back in front 10-3.

Waikato drew level minutes later when Bailyn Sullivan found his way over the try line. Sevu Reece converted the try and both teams were locked at 10 all at half time.

In the second half, Wellington were unfortunately too strong for Waikato scoring four unanswered tries.
