Prepare for kitten season

- AMELIA CHRISTENSEN-ROSE

Kitten season is approaching and there is already a high demand for the little fluff balls.

Last time the Waikato SPCA had kittens available for adoption, people were waiting outside the centre for a while before the doors opened.

Centre manager, Laura Vander Kley, said the centre was receiving daily messages about kittens, though there weren’t any available just yet.

Vander Kley said the SPCA helped to make sure a new kitten owner was educated and knew what they could expect.

‘‘Kittens are so much fun but a lot of work,’’ Vander Kley said.

‘‘They can be troublesome, so you have to prepare appropriately.’’

Some of the kittens arrived at the SPCA after being homeless, abandoned and victims of neglect. They needed a forever-home full of love.

If you’re thinking about getting more than one kitten, Vander Kley suggested getting related cats.

Kitten season is normally between November and March, with cats breeding in the warmer weather, but this year the Waikato SPCA received its first litter in September, two weeks earlier.

The SPCA encourage people to have their cats desexed to help slow down the rates of kittens born.
