Designer delivers new collection

- MATTHEW CATTIN

With a surname like Power-Silk, Danielle has chosen a fitting career in fashion design.

The self taught designer from Stanmore Bay is set to launch Collection Number One in the New Generation Show at New Zealand Fashion Week.

Designing since she was 14, Power-Silk is determined to break into the global fashion market.

‘‘Is that realistic? Some people say no, but you can’t listen to people,’’ Power-Silk says.

‘‘It’s a very competitive industry so if you’re going in, you need to go in with confidence, and you need to know you’re offering a premium product.’’

Drawn to fashion design for the ‘‘self expression, creativity and beauty,’’ Power-Silk says she loves seeing ladies wearing her work and feeling great.

The collection is inspired by black and white cinematic photography and actresses of Hollywood’s golden age.

The 10 looks in the cohesive collection ‘‘are a celebration of women; enhancing and highlighting curves and feminine nuances’’ for Autumn/ Winter 2017, Power-Silk says.

Handmade from concept sketches to completion, Power-Silk has kept

computers out of the design process to ‘‘keep the old school traditional techniques’’.

With the power of social media, the industry can be easier to break into, she says.

‘‘If you go into the industry with a clear target market, direction and support, and you take action on that, it can fast track your success,’’ she says.

Power-Silk has been involved in Fashion Week since 2011 when she showed her first design in the Walk the Line category.

She entered each following year until she was asked to judge the category in 2015.

Her designs have also had a successful showing at the Melbourne Spring Fashion Week in 2014.

Power-Silk’s label will offer custom and one off pieces for clients as well as small runs to selected retailers.
