Process continues for potential trail

- RENEE CLAYTON

Things are looking up for the Snells Beach Ratepayers and Residents Association (SBRRA) in regards to a potential walkway/ cycle-way.

A feasibility report prepared by Frame Group Ltd has been presented to the Rodney Local Board by the SBRRA in the hope of implementing a path connecting Snells Beach to Warkworth.

The preferred route that is said to start from Hamatana Road in Snells Beach and finish at Elizabeth Street bridge in Warkworth is very much a community project that will encourage residents and visitors to get active and visit these places.

A member of the walkways sub-committee of the SBRRA, Gary Heaven, believes the recommended standard for the trail is a walking track/grade two cycleway.

‘‘At this stage there are options in the route that involve the use of public land and private land - all land owners are aware of the proposal.‘‘

‘‘A grade two track is wide enough for most of its length to allow cyclists to pass or ride side by side and at a gentle grade for most of its length.’’

The estimated distance by road between Snells Beach and Warkworth is eight kilometres and if the trail is developed between that, it would take a cyclist between 30 minutes to an hour to complete and a walker around two to three hours.

According to the report it is estimated that the cost of the construction of a grade two trail is between $1.92 million to $2.06 million, and with design, consenting and management totals added it is an estimated cost of around $2.57 million.

‘‘Essentially we are at the ‘dotted lines on a map’ stage, but given that the majority of the route is on public land or quiet rural roads, we are confident,’’ Heaven says.

The next process is to secure funding. Last November the board granted $10,000 to complete a route option and feasibility study.

‘‘We sense a strong level of community support from not only people who want to use the new walkway but from people who want to help build it and maintain it.’’

The estimated maintenance cost will be around $20,000 to $30,000, but would reduce if some of the maintenance was completed by volunteers.
