Rodney is fond of films
The Rodney region has a long relationship with moving pictures.
Carolyn Skelton is a research librarian from Auckland Libraries’ West Auckland Research Centre and will be visiting Helensville on Sunday to talk about the changing face of picture shows in the Rodney District as part of the Auckland Heritage Festival.
She says travelling picture shows in the area started very early considering the difficulty in getting film out to the colony itself and then to rural settlements. ‘‘They really started here very early.’’
The first travelling picture shows could have been operating in the area as early as the last three years of the nineteenth century she says
Skelton will be giving a talk Those Were the Days: Picture Shows in the Rodney Area at Saint Josephs Catholic Church in Helensville on October 2 from 2pm-3.30pm.
