Look Good,Feel Better

- RENEE CLAYTON

Thousands of people are diagnosed with cancer a year but generous Kiwis continue to help make patients Look Good Feel Better.

Around 1,800 people were diagnosed with cancer this July and around $250,000 was raised in that month to help them feel good in the Look Good Feel Better workshops during their treatments.

Warkworth’s Life Pharmacy Franklins raised just under $500 which contributed to the $54245 that Green Cross stores raised all up.

Life Pharmacy Franklins retail manager, Megan Bayer and her team put up brochures and signs in their pharmacy to raise awareness. They also had a chair set up for women who have cancer to go in and get tips on make-up, or to get their make-up done. Alongside that they also asked at the counter if people wanted to make a $1 donation.

‘‘It is a great organisation to help women get thier confidence back.‘‘

The initiative has been running in New Zealand since 1991 and has helped more than 35,000 people by offering advice and tips on best techniques on everything from skin care and hair loss to make-up.

The workshops run in 33 centres around New Zealand.

‘‘This was our first time being involved, we would like to be more involved next year and get some of our cosmetic girls out in the community. There are workshops on the North Shore, but there is none from there right up to Whangarei. We would love to fill that gap,’’ Bayer says.

Look Good Feel Better’s, Clare O’Higgins says all the money raised goes directly to support more workshops.

Cancer patient, Katie Sharples took part in one of the workshops and gained more confidence.

‘‘Thank you New Zealand for your generous support. You’re giving me and thousands of New Zealanders undergoing cancer treatment the strength to look and feel like our ‘normal’ selves,’’ Sharples says.

O’Higgins says their aim is to help New Zealanders undergoing the gruelling side effects of treatment.
