Team Fitbits punch on with training

- RENEE CLAYTON

Only three weeks into their training, the Hibiscus Coast Ports of Auckland Round the Bays team can feel their fitness levels rising.

In the approach to the 8.4 kilometre run, team Fitbits have been attending weekly training sessions and runs at Auckland Council’s Stanmore Bay Pool and Leisure Centre.

Each week they are offered a personal training session, running session and a boxfit class.

On February 1, team member Nikki Henare met boxfit instructor, Susan De Alwis for a high intensity 45 minute training session.

‘‘It was really good, It is becoming easier to keep up and train,’’ Nikki said.

Susan has been a personal trainer and fitness instructor for the past five years and said she has run 10 marathons and that it is her passion.

‘‘The team is encouraged to attend each boxfit session to help with their cardiovascular build up.

‘‘The short bursts of high intensity training are great for running and helps to build up speed and lactic acid build up,’’ she said.

The team has six weeks to train and run outside for an hour every Saturday morning.

‘‘Everyone in the team is at different fitness levels which is awesome to work with, Susan said.

‘‘Everyone wants to be able to run the whole 8.4 kilometres nonstop so each week we have been progressing the runs and making

them longer and harder.

‘‘I still encourage the team to run at least twice a week without me for at least 20 to 30 minutes at the same time.’’

Nikki said she has been happy with her training and progress.

‘‘Each week I have been coming to boxfit and doing my personal training and running sessions.

‘‘I am also doing yoga on the beach and bootcamps which has been great.’’

Nikki has a goal of completing the run in under an hour and plans to continue training.

‘‘It has been a great experience so far and it is good to get back to the gym.

‘‘I have found stretching has helped me a lot when it comes to preventing injuires.’’

Ports of Auckland Round the Bays is going to be held on March 4 and will start from Auckland’s Quay Street.
