Orewa to host Oceans 18

- RENEE CLAYTON

For the first time, O¯ rewa Beach is the destination for New Zealand Surf Life Saving’s largest junior surf competition.

From March 1 to 4, hundreds of surf lifesavers will flock to O¯ rewa to take part in this year’s Under 14 New Zealand Surf Life Saving Championships also known as, Oceans.

For the past 16 years the Oceans carnival has been held at Main Beach, Mount Maunganui.

This year the NZSLS Board decided O¯ rewa would host the event as the beach meets their expectations when it came to venues and participation numbers and safety standards.

New Zealand Surf Life Saving’s, Mike Lord said the event is aimed at encouraging young children to pursue a future in life guarding.

‘‘Last year’s event saw 898 entries from 46 Surf Life Saving Clubs around New Zealand from as far North as Waipu Cove to as far South as St Clair in Dunedin.

‘‘This year is likely to be around the same figure.’’

This year NZSLS has teamed up with Sony.

To celebrate, Sony is giving away 2 XB10 speakers.

To go in the draw email, editor@rodneytimes.co.nz with your full name, address, contact number and a reason why you should win.

Entries close on February 23 and the winner will be contacted by the providers.
