Auckland Transport is hailing the Whangaparaoa’s Dynamic Lanes trial a success and, this week, announced plans to extend the operating hours by one hour to 7pm. (See P1).

Data collected since the start of the trial on January 24 has shown a positive improvement to the PM peak traffic flow on the road, AT says. Travel times have reduced and there is less queuing on Hibiscus Coast Highway which is also having a positive impact on the flow of traffic heading towards Orewa.

Anecdotally, I’ve heard that traffic flow has certainly improved. But I wonder what it’s been like for any pedestrians or cyclists brave enough to attempt to use the road? During a local board meeting mid-2017, the idea of a boardwalk for cyclists was floated but what do cyclists do at the moment? Is the road simply a ‘no-go zone’? I’d love to hear your thoughts editor@rodneytimes.co.nz
