Carrington wraps up world sprint canoe campaign with gold

-

Ten countries shared the medals on the final day of the International Canoe Federation (ICF) Canoe Sprint World Championships in Dartmouth, Canada with New Zealand picking up another title through their iconic paddler, Dame Lisa Carrington.

Carrington triumphed in the women’s K1 200 in 41.94s — an event she is unbeaten in since 2011. The K1 200 was dropped from the Olympic roster following the Tokyo 2020 games so no one is likely to threaten Carrington’s dominance in the immediate future.

Olympic champion Nevin Harrison of the United States claimed gold on her return to international racing in the women’s C1 200.

Harrison triumphed in 49.87s, with silver going to Maria Corbera of Spain in 50.54s and Wenjun Lin of China earning bronze in 50.55s.

In the men’s C1 1000 Catalin Chirila won Romania’s first world title since 1986, triumphing in a time of 4m 14.28s. Chirila held off Olympic champion Isaquias Dos Santos, with the Brazilian earning silver in 4m 15.80s as Czech Republic’s Martin Fuksa won the bronze medal in 4m 16.21s.

In the men’s K2 500, Hungarian duo Bence Nadas and Balint Kopasz were victorious in 1m 34.98s.

This will be a new discipline at the Paris 2024 Olympics and was also a second world title of the weekend for

Kopasz.

Lithuanian pair Mindaugas Maldonis and Andrej Olijnik claimed silver in 1m 35.56s, with bronze going to Jean Westhuyzen and Thomas Green of Australia in 1m 35.85s.

In the women’s K2 500, Karolina Naja and Anna Pulawska of Poland continued their impressive form this season as they won the event in 1m 49.87s.

Australia’s Alyssa Bull won two events on the day — the women’s K1 1000m in a time of 4m 27.65s, and then alongside Jackson Collins in the mixed K2 500 in 1m 39.48s.

Hosts Canada also won two golds — in the women’s C4 500 in 1m 56.14s thanks to their team of Sophia Jensen, Sloan Mackenzie, Katie Vincent and Julia Osende, and the mixed C2 500 in 1m 56.87s with Vincent and Connor Fitzpatrick. — Supplied content
