Nicholsons are tops in South Taranaki
A long-standing family business is South Taranaki’s Top Shop award winner for 2016.
Fiona and Calvin Nicholson are still trying to wrap their heads around the fact that their photography shop has been recognised after 34 years in Hawera but are delighted their hard work has paid off.
Customer service is important to the Nicholsons. They work in a fast-paced, ever-changing industry where their services are dictated by what the customer wants.
‘‘It was a lovely surprise. Actually, more like a shock,’’ Fiona said. She said things have changed dramatically in the last few years. Equipment needs to be updated every three years and retail products need to be varied and in the moment. ‘‘When new things become available we’ve had to add to it or change the way things are done. It’s huge.’’
Fiona said capturing commemorations and celebrations in a way the client wanted was also a large part of what they did.
‘‘It’s unique to some clients. They might have a frame size they want to fit something in or, they want something restored. We live it every day.’’
The introduction of digital photography has opened up a whole new world for clients. They no longer need every image printed but they like to be unique. Prints can go on to any number of items, it isn’t just about fitting photo to frame.
‘‘There’s never really any dull moment, there’s always a challenge. Each day.’’
As the only dedicated photography business in town also dealing retail, they often feel the pressures of expectations and the desire to fulfil what clients want. ‘‘Everybody wants the best that can be done for them and that’s what we try to provide,’’ Fiona said.
Receiving awards such as the Top Shop lifestyle and leisure category and South Taranaki Top Shop is confirmation that they are doing something right. ‘‘When we won the category I think we just sat there. It was a real surprise and an absolute thrill to have won it.’’
The Taranaki supreme Top Shop award is yet to be announced. The Nicholson Photography team will be re-judged and the ultimate award will be announced in November.
