Youth hang out offers workshops

- PETRA FINER

Six months into its tenure, the Hawera Youth Facility is ready to offer youth-orientated workshops.

Co-ordinator Jacqueline Potroz said the first, a six-week long ‘‘True Respect" course for teens would hopefully be the start of regular workshop events for youths. For youths aged 14-17, True Respect provides the key to healthy relationships by encouraging respect for self, others as well as through education.

‘‘It’s touching on subjects around sexuality, healthy relationships and sexual health... it is going to be getting into the nitty-gritty of it,’’ she said. ‘‘They’re quite sensitive topics for some people.’’

Potroz said there were no other programmes delivering this type of information to youths and she felt it was important to ‘‘fill in the gaps’’.

Some other workshops are planned for later in the year. If they were successful Potroz said she hoped to see it expand in 2017. Hawera Police, Family Planning and social workers are supporting it and will be be working with the youth as well. Potroz said she would be delivering a mental health and wellbeing course to youths in the same age range in term four.
