Rough Habits Hawera travelled to New Plymouth as clear underdogs in their Duff Rosebowl quarterfinal clash against NP Rangers. Having only nine players on Thursday, Hawera were looking at changing the ledger, by beating NP Rangers on their home turf. Hawera were to strike first, after only two minutes a Mustafa Can free kick was headed by Jeremy Birss towards goal and Blair Robins completed the move by placing the ball into the corner of the goal.

Hawera was very unlucky not to score 10 minutes later when a strike by Pete Kelbrick hit the crossbar. Rangers didn’t have a lot of attacking opportunities in the first half, with Hawera midfield playing strongly and the defence shutting the Rangers attacks down. Hawera led 1-0 at halftime.

In the second half Hawera once again started strongly had a number of scoring opportunities, and it was Jared Kelbrick who struck a fantastic volley to double the lead to 2-0. Halfway through the second half Rangers managed to score a goal against the run of play. This seemed to fire them up and they managed to level the score five minutes later. Hawera regrouped, and were unlucky not to score the winner in normal time. It was 2-2 at fulltime. Hawera defence really stepped up strongly in the extra time, putting in some great challenges and allowing the midfield and strikers to attack. Hawera were unlucky not to score straight after the halftime when a Jeremy Birss free kick was saved by the keeper pushing it on to the crossbar. The deadlock was broken in the second period of extra time, when Pete Kelbrick headed in the winning goal from a corner kick. Hawera thoroughly deserved their win. Players of the day were Mustafa Can and Blair Robins.
