CALF AND LAMB DAY: The inaugural Hawera schools calf and lamb day, including beef breeds will be held on Tuesday October 11 at 11am at the showground­s. The exposure that some of these children have now may open up another career door in the future. So It is not just for the rural children but town children may need to find a farming friend. Animals must be born after July 1, with no clipped or oiled animals presented. Sections are 10yrs and under as at date of show and 11 years and over up to including Year 8 students. Apart from the standard judging there will be extra awards for ‘‘most school entries’’ (aggregate) and also a school leading group.

BOOK FAIR: Taranaki’s biggest book fair is being held at St Joseph’s Church Hall, Victoria St, Hawera during the school holidays on the following dates: Thursday

HAWERA LYSAGHT WATT GALLERY: On show now at the Lysaght Watt Gallery in Hawera (Union Street) is the latest exhibition entitled We’ve Been Busy - a diverse range of work created by the Hawera Art Club, including paintings in watercolou­r and acrylic and a display of marionette (string puppets) which have been made by members who attended a recent workshop. We are also pleased to display a collection of work from the late Jim Hayward (which are available for sale). Lysaght Watt Gallery is open Monday - Friday 10am to 4pm and Saturday 10am to 1pm.
