Spectacula­r fireworks safe fun Whanau affair

South Taranaki, get set for some serious pyrotechni­c explosive fun when the More FM Fireworks Spectacula­r takes place on Saturday, October 15 at the Egmont A & P Show Grounds in Hawera.

Gates open at 6.30pm and Whanganui band The Clazzmatic Boogie Orchestra will be performing until the fireworks start. This popular seven-piece jazz band plays a wide range of music - funky soul to R&B from artists such as Etta James Chicago and Bruno Mars.

The Fireworks Spectacula­r attracts thousands of people each year and is a very popular event in the region’s events calendar.

It’s a real fun; family affair, said event organiser Jody Bloor.

‘‘Bouncy castles, face painting, merry-go-round, glow sticks and other glowing products will be on offer for the youngsters and the young at heart,’’ she said.

‘‘Last year we introduced good old-fashioned games like the three-legged, sack and wheelbarro­w races, which were so popular that they will definitely be back this year.’’

‘‘There will also be a variety of stalls to purchase food from such as pizza, Vietnamese food, American hotdogs, barbecue, bratwursts, coffee, doughnuts and ice cream. Or you can pack a picnic and enjoy a great family night out.’’

As in previous years the fireworks display is choreograp­hed by Van Tiel Pyrotechni­cs, the company that staged New Zealand’s largest ever display for the Auckland Millennium celebratio­ns and the Rugby World Cup opening.

‘‘Last year we had over 3000 people attend and, despite the drizzle which started as people were leaving, it was a great night.’’

Entry is $5 for adults, $2 for children or $12 for a family (2 adults 3 children). Car parking is available at TSB Hub and entry to the Show Grounds will be from Burnside Avenue and Williams Avenue.

If the weather is unsuitable the event will be on Sunday, October 16.

Residents are reminded to keep pets and animals safe during the evening. Mr and Mrs W T Wells (Manaia) received a letter from Trooper C Wells who is in a Military Hospital in England stating that he is doing well and hopes to be out on furlough soon. He has had a very long illness, but hopes to be better soon and is getting splendid treatment.

Mr and Mrs Jos Turner of Eltham received advice from his Excellency the Governor and Minister of Defence that their son Private Turner died of wounds in France.

On Wednesday evening a very large crowd gathered at the Auroa Hall to farewell and wish Godspeed to Gunner Badland who is leaving to fight for his country.
