Mother leads by example
Deanne Werder-McCrea decided that after having children it was time to get fit and healthy again. She soon realised she needed to lead by example, set goals and plan to achieve a higher level of fitness.
’’I wanted to motivate my children and teach them that if you work hard enough you can achieve anything.’’
Having completed a couple of marathon events Werder-McCrea started to look around for the right sort of fitness environment to continue her goals and achieve more.
She was stoked when she attended Ki Whanau Gym early this year.
‘‘Ki Whanau Gym provided me with the support I needed.
‘‘The members of the gym were just great in providing the support and encouragement that you need to achieve your own goals.’’
She was inspired to complete her first half Ironman in December 2015.
‘‘The instructors are so supportive always promoting ‘‘your pace or race’’ and goal of ‘‘believe to achieve,’’ said WerderMcCrea.
The gym continues to put others first, always willing to help their members succeed with improving healthier lifestyles.

A year into running, spin, core and step classes has a group of grass roots fitness buffs transforming their lives. IronMaori Ki Hawera Whanau Training and Support was formed to create a family-based, nonjudgmental environment to support all levels, sizes and ages. Each member is supported in achieving their own goals while aiming for events such as IronMaori Taranaki, hosted in Hawera, or other sporting events. Now they are sharing their stories, in a partnership with the Taranaki Star, to help inspire others to get off the couch and get fit. ‘‘I wanted to motivate my children and teach them that if you work hard enough you can achieve anything.’’

‘‘I really like the extra things the gym undertakes, like going outside of normal gym environments and organising weekend bike rides.’’
She hopes her story inspires others to set goals and plan to achieve them big or small.
Her advice is, ‘‘set goals, plan, work hard and find the right environment and people for you to train with.
‘‘It is so easy to stay in bed when the weather is rubbish outside, however one thing I say to myself when I can hear wind and rain outside it’s never as bad as it sounds.
‘‘Once you get out there you are always motivated to achieve and get on with your goals.’’
