Still time to get sports nominations in
‘‘A number of incredible people have been recognised over the years.’’
Time is running out for nominations for this year’s Taranaki Daily News Sportsperson of the Year awards.
Nominations close on October 21 and Sport Taranaki chief executive Howie Tamati is urging sports clubs and codes to get their nominations in before the deadline.
‘‘It is a really iconic Taranaki event and a number of incredible people have been recognised over the years,’’ he says. ’’Entries are down a bit this year and while we are doing what we can to encourage the codes to nominate athletes and teams, ultimately it is up to them.’’
This year’s awards evening will be held on Friday, November 25 at a new venue, The Devon Hotel’s Grand Auditorium.
The guest speaker is Dillon Boucher, the former exSpotswood College student who went on to win several titles in the Australian NBL, with the Brisbane Bullets and the NZ Breakers as well as representing New Zealand for many years. Boucher is now the NZ Breakers General Manager and is well known for his forthright views. He was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to basketball in the 2014 Queen’s Birthday Honours.
Last year he was the guest speaker at the Paddy Manu Awards in Hawera. Those awards recognise sporting excellence in South Taranaki.
