A big brainstorm begins

- JANE MATTHEWS

The 12 to 18-month long brainstorm has begun for one of Hawera’s biggest rejuvenating projects.

The new hub, which will hold the town’s heritage, arts, library, culture and information, is now full steam ahead in its planning and design stages, despite the estimated time.

’’It’s all about preparation,’’ town centre project co-ordinator Phil Waite said. ’’We do a lot of work at the front end and get it as best as we possibly can before we start doing any physical work,’’ he said.

‘‘If we rush it, we’ll make some mistakes or things won’t work out right.’’

Waite said this was such an important project, a lot had to be considered, including the large voice of the community.

‘‘It’s a facility that will be here for the community for quite some time, so to have their input to start with is great,’’ he said.

The hub was one of many ‘rejuvenating’ projects taking place in Hawera

Mayor Ross Dunlop said since this was such a significant part of the town everyone was ‘‘wanting to make this somewhere pretty special’’.

‘‘The community is really enthusiastic about it,’’ he said. ‘‘There’s been no negativity.’’

Waite said he had no idea when the final product would be ready as ‘‘there’s still all sorts of milestones to meet’’.
