Family forms through sibling run gym

- JANE MATTHEWS

In the past six months the Broughton siblings have gone from sitting at a table with a coffee and cake in hand to burning calories with a whole new family.

They are the founders of Hawera’s newest and only CrossFit-themed facility, 3B Fitness, and have had nothing but success and support since they held their open day in October to gauge interest.

Brothers Jason and Brendon Broughton are running classes at their new ‘‘CrossFit box’’ with their sister Dessi popping in and out, despite living overseas.

‘‘It feels like I actually want to leave Australia because I feel like there’s such a community feeling just around this box,’’ she said.

CrossFit is a form of ‘‘exercise and lifestyle’’ that has taken the world by storm.

Dessi said this is what peaked an interest with their now 50+ participants.

‘‘The beauty of these classes is you can have your elite athlete right next to the guy who’s just learning and they’re both dripping with sweat,’’ she said.

Dessi originally looked into CrossFit in Hawera when she came over from Australia and saw a gap. ’’There wasn’t anything I felt inspired by and growing up here I felt like something was missing,’’ she said.

And from there came the coffee and cake discussions and a decision to start something they were all passionate about.

The family joined forces with two athletes, Nathan Taylor and

‘‘110 per cent support for 100 per cent of the time you're in here.’’ Brandon Broughton

Cameron Koch, who have been helping coach classes. Since then many 3B Fitness members have gone away to national-level competitions and come home with their heads high.

Dessi said to see the athletes go away is one thing, but the support that follows is another.

‘‘We have just as many people who come on road trips in support that we have in participants,’’ she said. ’’Someone made a comment to us at a competition that they love our crew because we’re so noisey with cheering.’’

Brendon said their fitness centre had become a ‘‘community within a community.

‘‘That’s kind of what we offer here more as opposed to your commercial gyms, 110 per cent support for 100 per cent of the time you’re in here,’’ he said.

The Hawera-bred siblings love the family they have but welcome anyone to join, no matter their skill.
