Swimming in winning

- JANE MATTHEWS

Two seems to be the lucky number for three of the schools that competed in the Spragg Banner.

Of the eight schools that participated, two managed to bring home at least two trophies and another won the Spragg Banner for the second year in a row.

Normanby School was the banner winner on the day, thanks to its four carefully selected swimmers conquering the single relay race. School principal Linda Jefferies said she was absolutely delighted.

‘‘Last year we won the Spragg Banner after a very very long time of not winning anything, so getting it back for the second year in a row was pretty exciting for us,’’ she said.

Tawhiti School and St Joseph’s School Hawera also had doubles to celebrate.

Both schools had individual winners as district champions from the first race of the day. Emily Tippett of Tawhiti was named as District Girls Champion and St Josephs’ Reece Holmes the District Boys Champion.

Tippet was also named the girls’ Champion of Champions.

The winner of the boys’ Champion of Champions trophy was nine-year-old Will Perrett from St Joseph’s School.

St Joseph’s also took out a third award on the day. It won the Points Cup after collecting the most points, 168, as a school. Tawhiti came in second with 126 and Normanby School gained 70.
