Studios open temporarily

The Waverley Four are open for the public for four days.

If there was one thing that could be promised in Waverley over the next two weekends, it would be variety. A variety of art, that is.

Pop-up art galleries will be open throughout the town as part of the Artists Open Studios Whanganui together they’re called the Waverley Four.

The Waverley Four comprises one fulltime studio and three popup galleries that will include everything from paint, to mandela bowls, to glass to weaving.

Bianca Mitchell, who is one of the seven artists from the Southern Arts Collective who will present their art in the makeshift gallery at St Andrew’s Hall, was looking forward to the event.

‘‘It’s quite cool because someone can go into that one space and see it all, there will be something for everybody,’’ she said.

Mitchell is a painter but understood that some people aren’t just wanting to see that.

St Andrew’s Hall is one of the three places galleries will be open on Waverley’s main street, Weraroa Road, and the other at the Old Scout Hall on Chester Street.

The other galleries include work by national and international award winning glass artist Lisa Walsh, local weaver Rachael Johnson, mixed media artist Jo Old, and reflections of two artists sculpting work from the International Ice and Snow Festival held in Harbin, China.

Michaela Stoneman, the Arts Coordinator at the South Taranaki District Council, and also a contributing artist from the Southern Arts Collective, said the event in Waverley was popular.

‘‘Artists Open Studios has featured in Waverley for a number of years now, attracting hundreds of visitors over the two weekends,’’ she said.
