South Taranaki Star

POND WATER

-

Thanks to Mr Manning for his response to my letter in the Star on 9th March.

However, my experience of this taste/odour has been for some months, not “last week”.

I have chilled and boiled, all to no avail.

While a charcoal filter jug is effective, it is totally useless for my shower, and laundering my clothes - both of which have become daily experiences of a most unpleasant nature.

What would be the cost of installing the process which we are assured would remedy the objectionable taste/odour of our towns water?

The problem apparently is “algal and organic growths,” - by definition, anything organic dies and decomposes, during which process, changes occur which are generally unhealthy. Talk to our farmers about riparian strips.

We are told that our odiferous water meets all the health and safety standards.

Please advise us, who is testing, what is being tested for, how frequent are the tests, and when was the last one?

Are we able to be provided with a copy of the latest test report?

What was the result for the Maximum acceptable values for organic determinants of health significance ?

If this problem is so well known and so predictable, surely it is capable of timely attention during its “season”?

COUNCIL RESPONDS

As water treatment of taste and odour compounds can be quite complicated, I or my water treatment manager are more than happy to talk face-to-face with Mr Millard and have a robust discussion so he is able to get the full story.

There are no complaints logged in our system from Mr Millard, so I would like to take this opportunity to encourage residents who have requests, complaints or concerns to call our Contact Centre tollfree on 0800 111 323 (manned 24 hours a day, 7 days a week). This means that issues are logged and can be addressed quickly.
