Players in pink socks for the ladies

- JANE MATTHEWS

What a rugby club wants, a rugby club gets - even if it is pink socks and to hold a celebratory day for the ones they love.

After months of players asking,, the Southern Rugby Club is to hold a Ladies Day.

Club captain Darryl Heibner said the players wanted a day to celebrate the support their girlfriends, wives, sisters, mother and grandmas, and they wanted to do it in pink socks.

‘‘To be honest in the beginning we thought, ‘it’s bloody near $1500 to buy a set of socks for everyone’,’’ Heibner said.

‘‘Then we thought about it, and the players kept wanting to do it, and they wanted to do something pretty cool.’’

The day will consist of three Southern Shark rugby games with the players in pink socks, and an evening of entertainment, prizes, food, and drink to follow.

There’s no charge and anyone is welcome.

‘‘If we can get the ladies up here they’ll see that we’re a club, not just a bunch of rugby fellas,’’ Heibner said. ’’Our goal is to look after everyone.’’

This may be the first time this event has taken place but vicechairman Bevan Broughton said it’ was not just a special thing for one day.

‘‘It’s just the norm’’.

Broughton said a large portion of the club committee and managers were women and although they’re thanked regularly, this was a chance to show real appreciation.

‘‘I think it will just be a good, fun way to start the whole home season,’’ he said. ’’It’s just kind of exactly the right time.’’

Broughton said a rugby review recently came out in light of a few incidents that happened on the professional rugby level and focused on behaviour.

‘‘I remember reading the report, not that it’s for clubs, but there were some good points in it,’’ he said.

‘‘I certainly can’t think of any issues we’ve had, but it’s a good reason to try and lead.’’

Heibner said in the past the Southern Rugby Club had filled a bus with and and sent them to away games.

‘‘Usually the receiving club has a few drinks and something to eat, because obviously a few more people get stuff over the bar so they’re happy to,’’ he said.

‘‘It’s the same for us. It’s just about hosting and being that community that we’re trying to be.’’
