Community Board by-election profiles

-

The Ha¯wera-Tangahoe Community Board by-election is under way.

Voting documents have been delivered and can be returned by post or hand delivered to the South Taranaki District Council’s Administration Building , 105-111 Albion St, in Ha¯ wera by Thursday November 2 during normal office hours, and on Friday November 3 until noon.

A person can apply to enrol as either a residential or ratepayer elector up to and including Thursday November 2.

We asked the nominees: What’s your history with the community? What can you offer the community? What’s the biggest issue, in your eyes, this community is facing? Here are their responses.

Roydon Collingwood

I have lived here for approximately 25 years. In that time I have served on the board of Turuturu School and also the Hawera Intermediate. I was heavily involved with property upgrades and policy changes.

I can offer the community a positive ‘can do’ attitude, and the ability to ask the hard questions. I also bring business experience, maturity, honesty and forward thinking that will benefit the local community long term.

I don’t think one particular issue stands out in our community on its own. In my eyes a lot of small issues put together can compound into a larger issue. These would include, our infrastructure - water, sewage, etc. I don’t like a sticking plaster approach - let’s fix it once, properly.

Raymond Buckland

I own and operate a waste and recycling business servicing South Taranaki. I have served one term on the Ha¯ wera Community Board and for the past seven years I have been a representative for the community on the Ha¯ wera Hospital Health Forum.

With my business skills and open mind I will listen to any issues brought to me from anyone in the community - advising them and directing them so the issue can be resolved.

The biggest issue that I think this community is facing is ensuring the needs of people are met. The aging population and the need to create work opportunities for the younger generation.

Dee Cleaver

I have been a part of the Ha¯wera community all my life. I’ve owned and operated two businesses in our town, it gives me a great understanding of the community. I have been an active member of the police volunteers, which keeps our town safe, for 16 years.

I am passionate, energetic and love to see things achieved. I have the motivation to want to make things happen.

One of the biggest issues for me in our town is the parking. With development underway and the businesses growing, more people will be in the CBD but not enough parking.
