South Taranaki Star

Our front page story this week will resonate with many readers in more than one way.

There seems to be so many more trucks each year on our roads and those roads were not built to withstand the pressure the huge rigs put on them.

I can remember the first time I went to the United States, many years ago, and looking up at the enormous trucks driving alongside us and being absolutely gobsmacked. We just didn’t have them on our roads in the 1980s.

But times changed and the railways stopped being the major transporter of goods so the big rigs were introduced.

But nobody realised the damage that those trucks would do. Perhaps this country of hills, mountains and windy narrow roads needs to look at the railway system as a cheaper alternative. That would be after it was upgraded of course.

There is more interesting reading and information in this issue, including stories about two new school principals.

South, Central and Coastal Taranaki is certainly alive with activities.
