Have fun in Stratford parks

- KRIS BOULT

Evergreen is the perfect name for a game in the park.

This new, augmented reality game has been launched in Stratford as part of Parks Week.

The game will be free and available to play in Page St Park and Victoria Park in Stratford from March 13 until March 18 and each park has had a game specifically designed for it. Anyone keen to try Evergreen is able to download the Magical Park app for free from Google Play and the App stores beforehand.

‘‘It’s very similar to Pokemon Go,’’ Alicia Cameron, Stratford District Council Communications Officer said.

‘‘It is hoped the game, which has an environmental twist, will help teach children and families.

‘‘People wll play it on their phones and characters will appear in different areas of the park with a task or message about the environment,’’ she said.

The game is all about the fundamentals of recycling and caring for the environment.

‘‘It will highlight the parks’ green space and help spread the clean green message as well as getting kids outside and moving around,’’ Cameron said.

Parks Week was a huge success across parts of Australia and New Zealand last year and this year the Stratford Council decided to get on board, the new game being just one of the many activities for people to try out during the week.

Other activities on offer include Zumba, group fitness, yoga, tai chi, and aqua pump classes and you don’t need to be super fit to give them a go.

‘‘It’s a great chance for people to go to a fitness class that they may not otherwise go to,’’ Cameron said.

All the activities are free of charge and participants just need to turn up 15 minutes before each activity for registration.

There will also be spot prizes each day, and all participants who partake in the events over the week will go in the draw to win a three-month membership with the TSB Pool Complex. For a full timetable of all activities, check out the Stratford District Council Facebook page, or the Stratford District Council’s website.

❚ National Parks Week aims to raise awareness on the value of parks and open spaces, and to get people out of their living rooms and enjoying the outdoors.
