Speed Humps to be installed in Pātea

Egmont Street in Pātea is set to get new speed reduction measures following community efforts to get motorists to slow down.

South Taranaki District Councillors approved a proposal to install a raised platform and three speed humps along Egmont Street at their Council meeting on 3 April, after receiving a petition from the local community to do something about speeding motorists. Council consulted the Pātea community with the proposal back in late February and asked for their feedback. A total of 108 submissions were received, 82% of which supported the proposal, leaving 18% that did not.

Deputy Mayor Rob Northcott stated as a resident of Pātea, that this was a 'last resort', but something needed to be done to keep people safe.

Mayor Phil Nixon says the decision was good democracy.

"This is the Council working with the community to achieve what the community asked for."

Work on installing the reduction measures will be completed in two stages, starting with the three speed humps followed by the raised platform, and is expected to be complete by end of June 2024.
