Survival of club in the balance

-

The survival of the Tokoroa Golf Club is of concern at the moment, because of slim male attendances on club days. With a membership of between 150 to 180 men, appearances on Saturdays are lucky to reach 20.

Club captain Owen Wilson voiced his concerns at the latest executive committee meeting, saying that if things did not pick up in the next weeks and months the club might not be able to survive.

Despite the low attendances on club days a major positive at the moment is the success of the club’s New World Tokoroa representative teams. In the men’s competitions, division 2 lead the way on 8 points after beating Narrows 5-3 on Sunday.

Division 6 gained maximum points without having to hit a ball when Waitomo defaulted.

The Prebble Cup Team travelled to Pirongia where they beat Ngahinepouri 8-4.

The junior Pennant team have held on to their second position, and in the women’s representative competition Tokoroa beat Putaruru 4-2 in the first round of the Wills Cup and lead with 60 points. Results from the second round of vets’ Pennant held on Monday March 19 were not available at time of print.

Saturday saw Gavin Cortesi and Alan Harris winning the Russian Roulette ( drawn pairs, stableford multiplied hole by hole) with 87 points, followed by John Bartley and Lua Tafau on 86. Third prize went to Rex Asiata and Malcolm Buckley on 84. Twos were scored by Henry Skelton on the 124m par 3 13th and John Bartley on the 353m par 4 6th.

In the ladies’ competition of the day Shanynn Mccaskill followed up her excellent round from Friday to score a 62 nett, with Teia Skelton on 66.
