Trio enjoy good laugh

-

The boys from Hollywoodfun Downstairs know how to have a good laugh and rock the hell out of their instruments.

The trio is made up of two former Tokoroa locals, Kurt William, Grant Gall and Wellingtonian Tim Myhill.

Kurt describes the band’s music as ‘‘indie noise pop’’, a term the band members have coined themselves.

‘‘Our music fits into so many categories but doesn’t really fit into one,’’ Kurt said. ‘‘We had to make up a genre.’’

The band was formed in 2008 and has come full circle in the past year.

‘‘We are about to go into the studio to record our full length album with the help of well-known producers like Mike Gibson who has worked with Ladi 6, Trinity Roots and Fur Patrol.’’ Kurt said. The album has the band’s original tracks.

‘‘It’s all original songs,’’ Tim said. ‘‘We all have different tastes in the music we listen to, Grant likes 50s and 60s pop, I like rock, indie and Kurt likes everything.’’

Asked what song is their guilty pleasure, the trio think hard.

‘‘Ok, I’ll be straight with you,’’ Tim says. ‘‘ Rosanna by Toto, I secretly listen to that song because I secretly love it.’’ he said.

‘‘I s’pose all my music is kind of embarrassing to a certain extent,’’ Grant says. ‘‘ The Hollies? I don’t know.’’

Kurt’s guilty pleasure takes the group by surprise.

‘‘Ok, when I was five I asked my dad to buy me the Culture Club tape, because I loved Karma Chameleon.’’

Hollywoodfun Downstairs will launch their EP Album in Tokoroa on March 1, at the Tokoroa Cricket Club starting at 9pm.
