Excellent boys awarded
Young, inspirational leaders Jayleb Dean and Jerreau Tonge have been recognised for their work.
The two young men received prestigious awards at the 2013 Foundation for Youth Development (FYD) Excellence Awards at Government House in Auckland.
Jayleb Dean, a Kiwi Can leader who works with students at Strathmore School, David Henry School, and Whakamaru School, was awarded an Outstanding Contribution from a Kiwi Can Leader Award for his contribution to the programme.
Jayleb was nominated for the award for going above and beyond to create positive changes in any way he can.
‘‘This means a lot because I am grateful to have such a fun and different job. I love seeing the enjoyment on the children’s faces as well as seeing the ideas click in student’s minds,’’ Jayleb said.
17- year- old Jerreau Tonge from Tokoroa High School walked away with a Stars Outstanding Contribution from a Peer Mentor Award, having demonstrated exceptional progress throughout the Stars programme.
He was one of three people in the country nominated for the Stars award.
FYD Stars Co-ordinator Tony Jones said Jerreau has ‘‘rolemodelled the mentor position better than ever imagined was possible for someone so young’’.
Jerreau said he is stoked Tony made it possible by putting his name forward for the award.
The FYD Excellence Awards, sponsored by DNZ Property Fund acknowledge the accomplishments of outstanding young people, many of whom have made massive changes to both their outlook and their lives, FYD CEO Marion Short said.
‘‘ These young leaders have been on a life-changing and challenging journey, they have learnt so much, including new skills that will serve them well in the future.
‘‘We are so proud of them. Their progress and achievements are examples of the difference FYD’s programmes can make to the lives of our young people.’’
