Golfers in numbers for fundraiser

- By PETRICE TARRANT

Final fundraising figures are yet to be tallied from the Tirau Lions Club Charity golf tournament but early indications are promising.

The annual event, which has been running for the past 40-plus years, had one of the best turnouts ever, fundraising committee member Murray McAlister said.

‘‘The weather played its part, we had 105 golfers register, probably the most ever, and a total of 97 individuals and businesses pledged support with dollars and/or product. On top of that, we had huge support from our members right from the start, through to the necessary tidy-up afterwards.’’

He said the event was first and foremost the responsibility of the fundraising committee under the chairmanship of Lion Charlie Roling.

‘‘Lions is not about personal kudos so we won’t do any more than recognise the hard work of that committee. The way it had so many people working together was crucial to the event’s overall success.’’

He said they are still calculat- ing exactly how much will be donated to the Cancer Society’s Lions Lodge.

‘‘That is because some of the cash pledges have yet to arrive and we have not yet turned some of the product donations into cash. What we do know is that we will have our best ever result for this tournament. In very broad terms, we have for the last two years raised in excess of $10,000 and we are very confident we will easily surpass that figure this time.’’

Once again the Tirau Lions want to acknowledge everyone who supported the cause.
