14 crosses pay tribute to Tirau’s fallen
The plaque will be joined across the road by 14 crosses made by Collingwood in 2015. He said the town had nothing previously to recognize their own soldiers. Supplies donated by businesses in Putaruru were used. “It was quite moving. They left for World War One and never came home.” Ian Mcleod from Te Aroho RSA researched the names of the soldiers who left. Children from Tirau Primary School joined in with a school project adding extra information. Collingwood said any help in finding more information on the remaining soldiers would be appreciated. Tirau crosses will be placed in a national Field of Remembrance joining others from around the country in 2018.
