Tokoroa hosts RSA Bowls

- TAMARA THORN

For the first time in 53 years the RSA National Bowls Tournament has been held in Tokoroa, leaving a good impression on visiting teams.

The bowls tournament was held at the Tokoroa Event Centre on June 24-25, with 44 teams taking part in the competition.

Tokoroa RSA President Ken Reid said the tournament went well and had great support from the South Waikato.

‘‘Many of the visiting teams were quite surprised with the venue,’’ he said.

‘‘And many teams asked us to run it again next year’’

The RSA Nationals are held once a year, and this year brought 44 teams together from as far North as Whangarei and far South as Wellington.

Reid said the two days were excellent, and heard ’’comments on how well it [the event] was run and how friendly the town is.’’

He said visitors mentioned how nice Tokoroa is and how lovely the people are.

‘‘We achieved our aim to show the town off.’’

The bowls tournament was planned over two years, and Reid said he was ‘‘quite rapt’ with how it went, no hiccups and went quite smoothly.’’

He said it was a learning curve as it was the first big tournament they have held.

Reid said he wanted to thank everyone who has helped make the weekend a great success including the committee, South Waikato District Council and the 46 sponsors who donated the venue, prizes and helped run the event.

‘‘We achieved our aim to show the town off.’’ Ken Reid
