Split over Easter trading

Moss did however highlight the religious significan­ce of the day which marks the resurrecti­on of Christ.

‘‘A certain sector of the community still sees Easter Sunday as sacred and as a religious holiday so there is the question of balance there of what the community really wants,’’ he said.

Councillor Peter Schulte said he supported a move to relax regulation­s and if businesses wanted ot open, they should be allowed too.

Fellow councillor Marin Glucina agreed and Councillor Adrienne Bell said many businesses were ignoring the current rules anyway.

Reaction among businesses was mixed.

Lisa Karauna and Evan Dickinson from Morrissey’s clothing in Leith Pl, Tokoroa said they weren’t fussed either way.

‘‘We are alright because we can still have time off, we just work it out between us,’’ Karauna said.

Tokoroa Dairy’s Joyce Liang said she has no issue with opening.

‘‘It’s no problem as we get money, we get paid,’’ she said.

Rosebery St Lois’s Gift Boutique owner Lois Potaka was adamant shops should not open.

‘‘I would rather spend time with family, it is not me,’’ she said.

Impact Photograph­ics Ltd Wilhelmina Ryder agreed saying they had very little time as it was.
